This week landed heavily on prediction models, which is a pattern worth naming: we have ten studies building or validating machine learning systems across maternal outcomes, fertility, and postpartum mental health.

The strongest thread is early warning systems that actually move the needle on timing, cardiotocography models catching fetal hypoxia three to six hours earlier than standard care, and time-aware approaches outperforming last-minute alerts. That's actionable. But here's what I'm watching: four preprints, and none of them peer-reviewed yet, which means we should hold tight on claims until those pass review. More important, nearly everything assumes you have clean data and access to the technology. The lactation study and the piece on PMOS treatment gaps in rural India both name what we don't have: lactation status isn't even recorded in administrative data, and whole regions lack access to basic care. Before we celebrate the next algorithm, I want to know who gets left out when it deploys. I'd suggest leading with the early warning timing story, it's concrete, and holding a second post on the evidence gaps the models expose.

I found a strong week. The machine learning endometriosis model and the IVF live birth prediction study are both the kind of careful multicenter validation work worth following, though neither breaks new ground clinically yet. The postpartum weight loss RCT (Supporting MumS) looks solid on its face but is still preprint, so hold judgment until peer review. The postpartum depression biomarker paper is intriguing but early, with that remarkably high accuracy figure you'll want to read skeptically. For breadth, the evidence summary on digital tools for postpartum depression screening gives us a clean synthesis to build from. Nothing failed this week, but four items are preprint only, so flag those as provisional.

This week I found two solid design-centered studies, both working the way I think research should. The first is a protocol for translating and testing a Spanish contraception decision tool, doing the hard iterative work of cultural adaptation alongside usability testing rather than bolting translation on at the end. The second is a cognitive interview study refining a questionnaire for endometriosis by actually listening to how patients experience and describe their symptoms, which means the tool will measure what matters instead of what researchers assumed mattered. Both are still in pilot phases, so the real test comes when they move to implementation, but the methodology itself is the kind that catches the gaps early.

Oura is doubling down on AI for women's health with both an in-app feature and an advisor chatbot, both trained on personal biometric data, which feels like they're betting on data-driven insights over the usual femtech guesswork. Meanwhile, the regulatory side is heating up too: Rejoni got FDA approval for an endometrial healing system, Marani cleared a remote maternal monitoring tool, and there's a whole article on how wristbands are earning clinical credentials, which suggests femtech is finally moving past the wellness hype into actual medical device territory. The rest of the week is partnership and expansion noise, Natural Cycles tripling users, telehealth clinics for incontinence, a menopause podcast, a 23-nutrient powder sachet with zero clinical detail, but the real signal here is Oura's AI play and the FDA wins, which tell a different story than the typical "we launched a thing for women" press release.

I found four items this week with real money attached to two of them. Providence received $1.1B to build Oregon's first dedicated women's hospital, and women's cardiovascular health in Calgary got $1.8M, but the Calgary funding came with almost no detail on who gave it or what exactly it covers. A female health brand called Gloriah is raising to expand, though no figures were disclosed. There's also a piece on wearable tech validating women's pain, which matters for research but isn't a funding story. Nothing flagged as problematic this week, but those two underfunded details are worth digging into if you want the full picture.
